FAQ

Is the Canul dangerous?
By player report, yes in effect: launch-week directions describe the wolves nesting beyond a wedged log as attacking on sight. Honeycomb has no combat system, so the practical answer is distance — scan from afar rather than walking into the nest area.
Can you get Canul materials from a built nest?
The Hotfix #5 notes (September 15, 2026) say built nests produce the same animal materials as wild ones and name the Canul among the nine producing species. Materials appear once animals move in and scale with more settlers. Whether Canuls specifically settle into player-built nests is not yet documented.

What is a Canul?

The Canul is a wolf-like animal — the shape players keep using for it in launch-week reports, and now officially shown in motion: the publisher’s pre-launch Friendly or Hostile short (September 2, 2026) introduced the Wildfire Canul, a fire-colored variant, and the Top Three Deadliest Creatures video (September 16) ranks that fire wolf as the game’s #1 deadliest creature. The species still has no Field Survey Log entry; its first patch-note mention is the Hotfix #5 species list on September 15, 2026, which names the Canul among the nine species whose built nests produce animal materials (see the taming & nests guide).

Everything else on this page comes from player reports and is labeled as such. For the officially documented caniform — the pack-hunting Bronze Wox of the Headlands — see that species’ page; the two should not be confused. The gallery below opens with the officially named Wildfire Canul; the second image, an official screenshot from the game’s site, stays deliberately unattributed because no source confirms which caniform it depicts.

Where do you find Canuls?

Two player-reported locations, both from launch week:

  • Northwest of the starting area, in the fertilizer-recipe directions: past the marsh with hostile on-sight birds, up the hill to the right of a waterfall, to a log wedged in the rocks. Pull the log free and the wolves’ nesting site lies beyond.
  • Two campfire-style Canul nests just east of the northernmost waterfall, on the route north out of the valley.

Both reports sit in the Valley’s marsh-and-waterfall country, which is why this page carries a Valley biome tag — treat it as the community’s current best pin, not an official habitat statement.

How do Canuls behave?

That is the full extent of documented behavior. No pack structure, vocalizations, or activity cycle has been described publicly yet; if the Hotfix notes add anything, this page and the patch tracker will be updated.

What is the canul canine for?

The Canul’s tooth — the canul canine — is one of three ingredients in the fertilizer recipe the community solved during launch week: horn shards + biomass + canul canine. The full route description, including the wedged log that guards the nesting site, is in the quests guide’s blockers section. It is the only documented use of the material so far.

How do Canul nests work?

Wild Canul nests (the campfire-style structures in the player reports) exist in the world, and since Hotfix #5 a nest you build yourself produces the same animal materials as wild ones — the notes name nine species: Camilla, Canul, Lonebid, Nango, Nibis, Strider, Wox, Zhalo and Zuma, with materials appearing once animals move in and scaling with more settlers. The placement rules — vegetation no longer blocks building, steep spots and water still do — are covered in the taming & nests guide.

What is still unknown about the Canul?

  • The base Canul’s look — official imagery shows the Wildfire variant; the unnamed base form has no confirmed image, and player descriptions are brief.
  • Named variants — related families have prefixed species (Bronze Wox, Silver Wox, Lucuma Camilla); none has been reported for the Canul.
  • Whether Canuls move into player-built nests — the Hotfix #5 notes name the species as a producer, but no player has documented settling one yet.

If you are hunting every animal for the Compendium or the hybrid-animal achievements, treat the Canul as an early test: solving the fertilizer recipe will take you to its nesting ground whether you like it or not. The wider roster starts at the creatures hub.
