Honeycomb: The World Beyond Tools Guide: Darts, Drone & Land Pointer

FAQ

What tools do you use in Honeycomb: The World Beyond?
A purpose-built sampling kit — a chisel, secateurs, a trowel and cutting scissors — rather than one all-purpose tool, plus the handheld scanner. The dart gun fires Sleep and Plant Booster darts, and vehicles include the hoverboard and the Viper. Tools and worn gear degrade at a rate set by your difficulty.
Why won't my Plant Booster darts speed up plant growth?
A developer reply says to aim at the ground near the Ancient variant of the plant, not at the mature plant; a player's follow-up adds the method — press T for scanner vision, harvest the fully grown plants nearby, and the early growth stages appear as pink dirt mounds the darts actually work on.
What does the Land Pointer do?
Its purpose is not officially documented. The community's best reading is that it creates a permanent map marker for tagging places like your base — and one player reported (September 14, 2026) that it refused to place anywhere, a bug the thread never resolved. Treat it as unverified.
How does the dart gun reload work?
Officially, since Hotfix #2: when no ammo type is selected, a reload auto-loads Sleep darts, falling back to Plant Booster darts if you have no Sleep darts.
What gear wears out while you wear it?
Per the Hotfix #4 notes: gear that drains while worn — the gas mask, immunity pump, rebreather and light stick — plus tools, the hoverboard, the drone and food in your inventory all wear at a single difficulty-scaled rate (1.0 on Scientist, 1.25 on Survivalist, 2.0 on Space Hell; the Engineer slider goes to 2.0). The game modes guide has the full table.

What tools do you carry?

The official picture is a purpose-built sampling kit, not one multipurpose tool: a chisel, secateurs, a trowel, and cutting scissors — each for a different kind of sample — plus the handheld scanner that feeds the registry. Scanner vision (the T key, per the player workaround quoted below) is also a placement-and-growth tool, not just a research view: it reveals what the normal view hides.

The dart gun: Sleep and Plant Booster darts

The dart gun is the toolkit’s one “weapon” — both of its ammo types serve research and growth. Two ammo types are documented:

  • Sleep darts — the default: with no ammo type selected, a reload auto-loads Sleep darts, falling back to Plant Booster darts (Hotfix #2)
  • Plant Booster darts — they accelerate plant growth, and Miracle Season asks you to craft one (an in-game guide appears at that moment since Hotfix #3)

The drone and the scout drone

Official patch-note facts:

  • Gamepad controls — drone up/down moved to D-pad Up/Down, and leaving drone mode no longer needs a button combination (Hotfix #2)
  • Scout drone + automatic resource discovery — the “Discover an underground deposit” objective completes the moment the scout drone starts scanning, if you play with automatic resource discovery enabled (Hotfix #5)

The drone is also one of the objects that blocks nest placement — see the taming & nests guide for that interaction.

Vehicles: the hoverboard and the Viper

Two vehicles are documented in the patch notes. The hoverboard — a craftable deployable per community reports — wears at your difficulty’s rate like everything else you own (Hotfix #4); the hoverboard guide covers unlocking, repairs and handling. The Viper lasts about one in-game day of use after its Hotfix #4 durability fix — budget your expeditions around that.

The gear that wears while you wear it

Hotfix #4 folded everything you own into one difficulty-scaled wear rate: tools, the four drain-while-worn items (gas mask, immunity pump, rebreather, light stick), the hoverboard, the drone, and food rotting in your inventory and containers. The rates — 1.0 on Scientist, 1.25 on Survivalist, 2.0 on Space Hell, Engineer slider to 2.0, with fainting costing 5/10/15% durability — are tabulated in the game modes guide. Storage slows food rotting to 15% of the world rate, and a powered fridge stops it completely.

The Land Pointer — purpose unconfirmed

The one tool without an official answer. A September 14, 2026 thread asked what the item does after it refused to place anywhere — open ground, structures, rooftops, trees all failed. The community’s best reading: “I think its only purpose is to create a permanent map marker” — useful for tagging bases, if it would deploy. No developer reply, no fix, no confirmation as of September 16, 2026; treat every claim about the Land Pointer as unverified until one lands.

Base-side conveniences

Three more tool-adjacent facts worth knowing, two of them community-documented:

  • Automated growpods harvest for you — but only plants with recurring yields (fruits, flowers). Crops like Lavie, which must be pulled out and replanted after every harvest, stay manual (community-reported)
  • Creative building — an Engineer-option that skips build time and places structures instantly in their fully built state. It does not unlock blueprints, remove build-area restrictions, or make building free — cost and speed are separate settings (community-reported)
  • Unstuck works even when you are not standing on the ground, as long as you are barely moving (Hotfix #2)

Everything above was last checked on September 16, 2026. Official facts trace to the patch notes tracker; developer and community facts trace to the linked Steam threads and are marked inline. For what all this kit is for, start with the where-to-start guide.
